At least 38 people were burned to death when a passenger train caught fire today near the northern Indian city of Ludhiana.
At least 10 of the victims were children
The Indian Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, has said that only a full investigation would reveal the cause. However sabotage has been ruled out.
Rail officials have said that a burning cigarette may have sparked the blaze.
The blaze broke out just after the train left Ludhiana in the state of Punjab.
Witnesses have said the train, which was on a 37-hour journey to the northern city of Amritsar from Bombay, was overloaded.
