Lithuania votes yes to EU membership

Lithuania has voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the European Union.

91% of voters in a weekend referendum said yes to entering the union.

The country's President, Rolandas Paksas, thanked voters and said the country had entered a new stage of its history.

Lithuania is one of ten mainly ex-communist countries preparing to join the EU in May next year. Malta, Hungary and Slovenia have already voted Yes.

Estonia and Latvia have scheduled referenda on 14 and 20 September respectively.

Slovakia votes next weekend and the Czech Republic on 13-14 June.

Neighbouring Poland, the EU's biggest member-to-be, faces deep concern over voter turnout at its own two-day referendum on 7-8 June.

The other would-be member is the internationally recognised Greek-Cypriot government on Cyprus.
