The country's two scouting organisations have voted in favour of a merger.
This afternoon the CSI, which has more than 22,000 members, voted by 67% in favour, just over the required two-thirds majority. The CSI was formerly the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland.
Earlier, the Scouting Association of Ireland, which has 11,000 members, voted in favour of the merger by 93%.
The new organisation, called Scouting Ireland will begin work on 1 January.
The Catholic bishops confirmed during the week that they were opposed to the merger because of concerns over property and the loss of the Catholic ethos. It is not clear weather they will attempt to stop merger.
