US-UK encouraged by reaction to draft resolution

The US and Britain have said they were encouraged by initial reactions in the UN Security Council, to a draft resolution to lift sanctions against Iraq.

The resolution would also give them control of its economy for 12 months.

In a concession to critics of the recent war, the coalition changed the draft just before submitting it, to acknowledge their obligations as occupying powers under the Geneva Conventions and the Hague Regulations.

The UN Security Council is to resume considering the draft next Wednesday.
