LRC chief links lack of competition with inflation

The Chief Executive of the Labour Relations Commission has said that lack of competition in key sectors of the economy has been a factor contributing to the higher than average inflation rate in recent years.

Speaking on RTE Radio this morning, Kieran Mulvey said consumers would benefit from more competition. He referred in particular to telephone, medical, transport and electrical charges.

In an article written for the Labour Relations Commission journal, Mr Mulvey also said that education, the legal profession, auctioneering and the insurance sector lacked a consumer-driven approach.

On the work of the commission itself, Mr Mulvey says the threat of industrial action is used too willingly in the public sector.
