The Palestinian Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas, has said he is seeking a meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, to discuss the new US-backed road map to Middle East peace.
He said that plans were underway for a preparatory meeting to set up a series of discussions on the peace plan.
Israeli government sources say the meeting is likely to take place after the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, visits the region next week.
