7 US soldiers wounded in Falluja attack

It is reported that seven US soldiers have been wounded in a grenade attack in the Iraqi city of Falluja.

The US military said the soldiers were not seriously hurt and have been evacuated from a compound in the city.

At least 15 Iraqi civilians have been killed by US troops during protests in Falluja in the past few days.

US President George W Bush is due to tell the American people later today that the combat phase of the war in Iraq has ended.

He will speak on board an aircraft carrier which is returning from the Gulf.

From the USS Abraham Lincoln, Mr Bush will outline that the major fighting is over and that Baghdad is no longer a threat to the United States.

He will stop short of declaring an end to the war, saying instead that this phase has ended and the reconstruction phase is about to begin.

He is expected to characterise the ousting of Saddam Hussein as a phase in the overall 'war on terror'.

According to a US State Department report just released, 775 people were killed in terrorist attacks worldwide last year.

The US President is also hoping to use the speech to focus attention back on his domestic agenda.

Mr Bush is about to embark on a nationwide tour to sell his proposal for tax cuts to the American people.
