GAA gets go-ahead for Hill 16 development

The GAA has been given permission to go ahead with the final phase of redevelopment at Croke Park.

An Bord Pleanála upheld a decision by Dublin City Council last August, to grant permission to the GAA to replace Hill 16 with a bigger stand with capacity for just over 13,000 fans.

Local residents had objected to the development.

But the board found that the proposed redevelopment of the north end of Croke Park would be acceptable in terms of public safety.

They also found the work would not seriously injure the amenities of the area or property in the vicinity. And that it would be in accordance with proper planning and sustainable development in the area.

GAA welcomes decision

The GAA has welcomed the decision.

But a spokesman said redevelopment of Hill 16 was unlikely to take place in the short term.

Croke Park will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Games in June, and building work cannot take place until the games are over.

The organisation also says it would cost more than €20m to carry out its plans.
