Hospital building needs to be replaced – report

A report commissioned by the parents of children attending Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin has found the hospital building needs to be replaced.

The report found that the current hospital building was seriously outdated.

The report was compiled by London-based hospital design consultant, Dr Ronnie Pollock. Dr Pollock did identify two units of excellence in the hospital: the Genetics and Diabetes Complex and the Unit for Child Psychiatry.

Crumlin Children's Hospital was built in the 1950s and has become the country's main hospital for seriously ill children. The hospital dealt with about 20,000 admissions and 60,000 out patients last year.

The Minister for Health, Micheál Martin, said he met with New Crumlin Hospital Group. Mr Martin was presented with a report they commissioned on the existing facilities at Crumlin and said he had indicated that the infrastructure was not acceptable.

The Minister said that this was why he had established in July 2002 a project team to oversee the future development of the hospital.
