Iran plane crash debris located

Rescue teams in south east Iran have located the debris from a military aircraft which crashed last night, killing all 302 people on board.

Most of the dead were members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, including high ranking military officials.

It is thought bad weather may have been a factor. The aircraft lost radio contact in a mountainous area in the centre of the country during the bad weather.

The aircraft was an ageing Russian-made Ilyushin. It is the third fatal crash involving former Soviet built aircraft in the country in the past year.

In Pakistan the commander of the air force and 16 other people have been killed in a plane crash in the north of the country.

Air Chief Marshal Mushaf Ali Mir was travelling with his wife and two other air marshals when the military transport aircraft came down.

The wreckage of the twin turboprop craft was found in North West Frontier Province 27km west of Kohat, an air force statement said.

Kohat lies on the edge of the tribal zone 60km east of the Afghan border and 45km south of the NWFP capital Peshawar.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
