The commander of US forces in the Pacific has asked for additional troops, aircraft and ships to deter an attack by North Korea if war with Iraq goes ahead.
However, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had not yet approved any such move.
The request came as Washington expressed concern that North Korea was engaged in a secret nuclear weapons programme.
This follows reports that US spy satellites had detected lorries taking on cargo at a North Korean nuclear power plant.
