Quota swap allows Irish prawn catch

Irish boats are to be allowed to catch prawns again, following a quota swap arrangement with British fishing organisations.

The fishing ban will remain on three other main species: megrim, monkfish and pollock.

Minister Dermot Ahern has announced an arrangement to allocate part of the Republic's herring quota next year to Northern Ireland in return for getting part of the UK's prawn quota for this year.

Irish boats can catch prawns until the end of the month, when new annual quotas are expected to be announced.

Fishing groups have welcomed the swap, but say that foreign boats can still fish all the banned species in Irish waters because they have bigger quotas than Irish vessels.

Planned demonstrations will still be held tomorrow.
