The Irish Water Safety organisation is to honour student Garda Colm Finnerty who saved three people from the River Liffey in the early hours of this morning.

The IWS tonight praised the 23-year-old Garda for his valour and courage in saving three people.

The 'Just In Time Rescue Award' is given to people who, through their own actions, successfully save the life of another from the water.

IWS also said no one should ever attempt to rescue a person in difficulty without adequate training and water confidence.

The incident happened at Wolfe Tone Quay when a passer-by dived into the water to help a man who had just fallen in.

Both got into trouble but the student Garda, who is a qualified lifeguard, dived in and brought the two men, one at a time, to the safety of a ladder attached to the quay wall.

Another passer-by also jumped into the water to help the rescue but got into trouble and had to be brought to safety by the young officer.
