Police in Kenya investigating yesterday's twin attacks in Mombasa have said that the 12 people held for questioning are foreigners.

Police say the twelve include six Pakistanis, four Somalis, a Spaniard and a US national.

US and Israeli security officers have joined the hunt for those responsible for the suicide bomb attack at the city's Paradise Hotel and the attempted missile attack on an Israeli charter flight.

The attack on the hotel which was popular with Israeli tourists, left up to 15 people dead.

Almost simultaneously, two missiles were fired at but missed an Israeli airliner as it was leaving Mombasa airport. Israel has begun evacuating its citizens from Kenya.

Speaking after his re-election as leader of the right wing Likud Party, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon promised to hunt down those behind the suicide bombing and the attempted missile attack.

In a separate development, the Palestinian International Co-Operation Minister, Nabil Shaath, has said the attacks were not the work of any Palestinian organisation.
