Union calls for extension of smoking ban

The trade union representing thousands of bar workers has called for a complete ban on smoking in bars.

Mandate was responding to the announcement that the Health Minister intends to ban smoking in pubs while food is being served.

The union's deputy General Secretary, John Douglas said the risks associated with passive smoking are too great to be ignored and the Minister must treat pubs as workplaces and impose a total ban.

Mr Douglas went on to criticise the partial ban, claiming it does not go far enough to protect bar workers.
