The penalty points system for speeding drivers has come into operation.
Motorists caught breaking the speed limit from now on will incur two penalty points as well as a fine of €80.
If the driver opts to go to court and loses, the fine can rise up to €800 and the number of penalty points will increase to four.
Anyone who accumulates 12 points against their licence within a three-year period will be disqualified from driving for six months.
