Lord Mayor supports O'Connell St plan

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Dermot Lacey, has said he supports a Council plan to cut down all the trees on O’Connell Street from next April as part of a rejuvenation plan for the area.

Former Mayor, John Gormley of the Green Party, had recently described the felling programme as "wrong"

The London Plane trees of O'Connell Street were first planted around 1916. Home to many different species of birds, including the Pied Wagtail, several have already been removed to facilitate the spire which is part of the planned rejuvenation of Dublin's main street.

Seven of the London Planes have already been felled at the Abbey Street junction. The reason they were felled was to facilitate an underground electrical substation for LUAS.

The Council plans to remove all of the trees on a phased basis and replace them with Lime trees, which it argues are more appropriate as they are slimmer and grow more vertically.

Those who want to retain what are commonly known as the 'willy wagtails' say the Council has to get it right when replacing the trees.

A Council spokeswoman said these concerns would be taken on board.
