McManus elected deputy Labour leader

The Wicklow TD, Liz McManus, has been elected deputy leader of the Labour Party.

Following the elimination of Dublin TDs Joan Burton and Joe Costello, Ms McManus defeated Willie Penrose by a margin of 90 votes.

Earlier, Pat Rabbitte was elected the new leader of the party.

Mr Rabbitte was declared elected on the second count. He was more than 800 votes ahead of his nearest rival, Brendan Howlin.

The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, congratulated Mr Rabbitte, describing him as one of the most formidable voices on the Opposition benches.
