Police in China have detained seven people including school officials and a local construction company boss, after the guard-rail on a staircase in a secondary school collapsed killing 21 students.
Police said their investigation had found shoddy workmanship at the school in Inner Mongolia played a role in the accident last night, which also injured 47 students as they plunged downwards.
The accident occurred yesterday at the No 2 Middle School in Fengzhen city which is about 270 kms northwest of the capital, Beijing.
Some 1,500 students, aged 14 to 15-years-old, had finished evening studies and had started to leave the school when the accident happened.
