Several dead as floods hit Europe

Several people have been killed after heavy rains caused extensive flash flooding in many European countries today.

Rescue workers in southern Russia say that at least five people have been killed and up to 70 more are missing after floods destroyed a campsite on the Black Sea coast, near the city of Novorosiisk. Up to 80 people were initially swept into the sea.

Twelve people are also missing after a lake overflowed in a separate incident in a nearby resort.

Elsewhere, a young boy and an elderly man died after floods hit the Gorj county in southern Romania. The country’s Environment Ministry has confirmed that more than 70 homes have been damaged in the floods.

In the Czech Republic, a 21-year-old female student was killed after she was hit by a falling tree near Pisek. The floods have also forced the evacuation of over 2,000 people in the southern Bohemia region.

In Austria, a German tourist has been reported missing after flooding in the city of Salzburg, while 1,000 people were evacuated from their homes after several dams burst in the lower regions of the country.
