UN blames rebels for massacre in Dem Rep of Congo

The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Mary Robinson, has said rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo were to blame for a massacre of nearly 200 people in the city of Kisangani in May.

She told the UN Security Council that the Rwandan-backed rebel group in control of the city, RCD Goma, had used excessive violence after a mutiny there.

Over 180 people were killed, most of them civilians.

Mrs Robinson was giving details of a UN investigation into the killings.
