VHI seeking subscriptions increase

The VHI has confirmed that it is seeking a substantial increase in subscriptions this year.

There are reports that the state-owned company is looking for an 18% increase but neither the VHI or the Department of Health - which has 28 days to object to the increase - have confirmed that figure.

Two years ago the Minister for Health used his powers to veto a VHI increase because of inflationary pressures.

Last year the VHI increased their charges by 6.25% in February and 9% in September.

There were increases of 9% in 1999 and 1998.

The Consumers' Association of Ireland has called on the Minister for Health to veto the proposed increase.
