The United Nations AIDS Programme has warned that the devastating impact of HIV is rolling back decades of development in Africa.
The report was released on the eve of the G8 summit.
UN experts have warned that the rate of economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa has fallen by up to 4% because of AIDS.
Some of the most important occupations are being hardest hit including teaching, farm management and military officers.
More than 28 million Africans are now living with HIV infection and in some countries as many as 30% of the adult population is infected.
