Ahern admits possible Govt spending cut

Bertie Ahern has admitted Government spending may have to be cut back this year. The Fianna Fáil leader said borrowing would only be considered for capital projects and not for day-to-day spending.

Speaking on RTÉ's Six-One this evening, the Taoiseach said health was the number one priority with education coming second. He said that, depending on resources, Campus Stadium Ireland might have to wait.

Earlier today, the Taoiseach repeated that he does not believe the result of the election is a foregone conclusion. Mr Ahern called on every citizen, of whatever affiliation, to vote in the election.

Defending his government's record, he said that if people wanted a continuation of the successful policies of the past five years, people should vote Fianna Fáil.

Asked about the outcome of last night's television debate, Mr Ahern remarked he was glad himself and Michael Noonan were able to pull such a crowd.

Commenting on this morning's opinion polls, he repeated that he did not believe Fianna Fáil would get an overall majority. In fact, in some cases, the party was trying to hold onto seats which they had held for 50 years.
