Jacques Chirac wins presidential election

Political leaders around the world have welcomed today's victory by incumbent Jacques Chirac in the French run-off presidential vote.

EU Commission President Romano Prodi said that by rejecting Jean Marie Le Pen, France had shown it was in the heart of Europe. Tony Blair said that it was a victory for democracy and a defeat for extremism.

Mr. Chirac secured more than 80% of the vote as against 18% for the far-right leader.

Acknowledging his victory Mr. Chirac hailed France for as he said, reaffirming its attachment to republican values.
