FF challenges opposition on budget plans

Fianna Fáil today challenged the opposition parties to show the public the bottom line on their budget plans. Fianna Fáil has accused Fine Gael and Labour, in a document titled "Back to the 80s", of promising all things to all people.

Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy said if the rainbow parties were returned to government the country would be back where it came from. He was speaking at a press briefing this morning.

Mr McCreevy said Fine Gael and Labour would borrow more and spend more if they got into government. However, when asked did such policies rule out a possible Fianna Fáil-Labour coalition, Mr McCreevy softened his stance slightly saying everything is possible.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen rejected Fine Gael accusations of incompetence regarding an unfinished hospital in Mullingar, saying the only monument to incompetence he had seen was Michael Noonan.

Fianna Fáil is clearly softening its stance on its plans for a sports campus. Mr McCreevy said the party was committed to building a national stadium. He added, however, that the question of "the add-ons" could be examined and developed in time.
