The Chairman of the Progressive Democrats, John Minihan, has described the proposed Campus Stadium Ireland project as the Taoiseach's pipe dream.
Councillor Minihan, a PD candidate running in Cork North Central, said the Progressive Democrats do not support the project because the price tag of one billion euro was not affordable for a country of this size.
He said the Irish people "should not be bounced into spending an inordinate amount of money on this unnecessary project".
Councillor Minihan said there was a need for proportion in the debate on the National Stadium. He said the country needed new roads, schools and hospital facilities much more than a stadium costing a billion euro.
Councillor Minihan's comments were made in a statement issued from the Progressive Democrats headquarters in Dublin.
The Progressive Democrats favour the development of Croke Park and Lansdowne Road as national stadia. Bertie Ahern said yesterday that anybody who believed all field games could be played on the same pitch had to be "a bit of a nitwit".
