Last chance to change old Irish coins

Tomorrow is the last day that retail banks will change old Irish coins for euro. Old coinage worth £118m is still in circulation. This represents almost 39% of the total amount of Irish coinage which had been circulating before the euro cash changeover at the start of January.

After tomorrow, people will have to travel to the Central Bank in Dame Street, Dublin, if they want to change this money into euro.

Tomorrow is also the last day that the Central Bank will change old notes and coins from other euro member countries into euro. Since the start of the year, the bank has been exchanging old currencies into new Euro notes free of charge.

There has been a considerable demand for this service with an average of about 175 people per day turning up at the Central Bank to change money over the past three months.

After tomorrow, people with foreign notes and coins from Eurozone countries will have to travel to those countries to have such monies changed into euro.
