Govt rejects O'Brien's Special Olympics claims

The Taoiseach and Tánaiste have rejected suggestions that the controversy over the National Aquatic Centre at Abbotstown could jeopardise the holding of the 2003 Special Olympics World Games. The warning about the possible effects of the row were made by Denis O'Brien, chairman of next year's Special Olympics.

However, this afternoon, Tánaiste Mary Harney said if the Cabinet had all the information it was entitled to, then perhaps different decisions might have been taken in relation to the awarding of the contract to run the Centre.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern also said he hoped that the Attorney General's report on the National Aquatic Centre could be completed tomorrow and that the matter could be brought to finality at tomorrow's Cabinet meeting.
