Labour launches abortion referendum "No" campaign

The Labour Party has claimed that the Government's proposed constitutional amendment on abortion will put women's lives at risk. At the launch of the party's anti-amendment campaign, health spokesperson Liz McManus said the proposal would remove the current protection for suicidal pregnant women, while at the same time it would restrict current medical practice.

Ms McManus said terminations necessary to save the life of a woman could only be carried out in designated centres, but if one was not nearby it could lead to the death of a seriously ill pregnant woman.

The Labour Party is planning to spend €70,000 on its campaign, with posters, billboards, and door-to-door canvassing. The party says it is confident the amendment can be defeated, if people are fully informed about what is in it.
