Israeli warplanes have bombed areas of the Palestinian city of Nablus in the West Bank. The attacks came after a Palestinian gunman infiltrated a Jewish settlement in the Jordan Valley and shot dead three Israelis.
A woman, her eleven-year-old daughter, and a soldier were killed. Several others were injured. The gunman was then shot dead by an Israeli Army unit.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, has flown to Washington where he is expected to ask President George W Bush to cut ties with the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, because of the continuing violence.
