The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has announced that the Attorney General Michael McDowell is to run for the Progressive Democrats in the forthcoming general election.
The Progressive Democrats leader has also confirmed that Mr McDowell is to become the new president of the party.
Mr McDowell told RTÉ tonight that he finally made up his mind this evening.
He lost his seat in the Dublin South East constituency in 1997 by 27 votes to John Gormley of the Green Party after a series of re-counts.
Tonight's news follows yesterday's announcement that former IFA leader Tom Parlon is also to run for the party.
