The Government is to give €800,000 in humanitarian assistance for the victims of the volcano in the Congolese town of Goma. Junior Minister Liz O'Donnell said that the human consequences were severe, with many casualties and hundreds of thousands uprooted from their homes.
Tens of thousands of refugees have streamed back into the town. They have ignored warnings of air and water pollution and the risk of further eruptions from Mount Nyiragongo.
60 people are now feared dead after a petrol station blew up in Goma. The blast happened as looters were siphoning fuel from the station's underground storage tanks.
It is thought that the explosion was caused when fumes from spilt petrol were ignited by hot volcanic lava.
