Afghan's interim president Hamid Karzai is to visit Washington later this month for talks with President Bush.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that the visit would provide an opportunity to develop the US partnership with Afghanistan, to eliminate terrorism and build a stable Afghanistan which would not again become a base for terrorist activity.
Colin Powell said earlier that the US would do everything it could to help Afghanistan recover from two decades of conflict. The American Secretary of State was speaking during a brief visit to the country.
It was the first visit by such a senior US politician to Afghanistan in 25 years. Mr Powell met members of the interim government in the capital, Kabul.
Mr Powell told a news conference that Washington was committed to giving long-term assistance to Afghanistan. He said that the United States was committed to working with the new administration to help create a better life for Afghans.
Afghan donor countries are to meet in Tokyo next week.
