Israel accused of killing Palestinian militant

Palestinian authorities have accused Israel of being behind the killing of a prominent advisor to Yasser Arafat.

Raed Karmi, who is a member of Mr Arafat's Fatah faction, was killed when a device exploded outside his home in the Palestinian-ruled town of Tulkarm.

Meanwhile, an Israeli was shot dead and another was injured by Palestinian gunmen near the West Bank city of Nablus. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades claimed responsibility for the shooting; it said it was avenging the death of Mr Karmi who was one of its leaders.

The Israeli Army declined immediate comment about Mr Karmi's death. Israel has called on Mr Arafat to arrest militants that it blames for a wave of attacks on Israelis since the start of a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in 2000.
