US transports more prisoners to Cuban base

Thirty more Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners left Afghanistan tonight under heavy guard bound for an American military base in Cuba. Fifty prisoners are now being held at the base in Guantanamo Bay.

Two US military personnel travelled with each of the detainees, who were being brought to the maximum-security jail being built at Guantanamo.

One of the detainees is said by the Foreign Office in London to be a British citizen.

The detainees, whom the Pentagon has called "unlawful combatants" rather than prisoners of war, were being held for interrogation.

The US Defence Secretary said yesterday that this status means they have no rights under the Geneva Conventions. Donald Rumsfeld insisted that they would be treated humanely.

Some could face military tribunals on terrorism charges.
