The former Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, has been granted the freedom of Dublin City. Mr Gorbachev is on the second day of his visit to the capital.

Mr Gorbachev said that the gift was very important to him and that he fully intended to exercise his newly acquired right to graze sheep in the city.

During the ceremony, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Michael Mulcahy, said that Mr Gorbachev's name was synonymous with the quest for greater freedom.
