Italian bankworkers protest over euro

Italy's problems have increased as banking staff walked out on a one-day to protest about work conditions during the euro changeover. Bank employees, who are demanding sector-wide contract talks, have also refused to work overtime until 3 February. The previous contract came to an end on 31 December 2001.

Italy has encountered more problems during the euro changeover than the other eleven Eurozone countries. Long queues formed in banks on 1 January, and police had to intervene several times to calm disputes provoked by the delays. The Italian government's inadequate preparation for the changeover resulted in a shortage of banknotes and coins for small businesses, as well as long delays at post offices and train stations.

Divisions within Silvio Berlusconi's government led to the resignation of Foreign Minister Renato Ruggiero at the weekend. The strongly pro-Europe minister quit after a disagreement with other cabinet members over the government's unenthusiastic reception to the new euro currency.
