Forty die in US air raid on eastern Afghanistan

At least 40 people were killed by Unites States warplanes today when they bombed eastern Afghanistan, it has been reported. One source, quoting witnesses from a nearby village, said that the attack took place when the people were asleep.

The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press reported that at at least five houses were destroyed by the bombs, one of which is thought to have been the home of a commander of the defeated Taliban.
