The new Deputy First Minister in the North has raised concerns about Sellafield with Tony Blair at Downing Street. SDLP leader Mark Durkan met the Prime Minister for the first time as party leader and deputy first minister.
Mr Durkan said that Mr Blair was "in no doubt" that the SDLP had always opposed Sellafield and the new MOX plant, but that the North's administration did not have a formal view on the matter.
Referring to remarks by David Trimble earlier this week, the Deputy First Minister added "none of us should pretend we are speaking for the administration on this issue where we don't have a formal view".
Mr Durkan also condemned the reaction of British ministers to Irish protests over Sellafield. He said that their dismissal of Ireland's complaints as simply party politics "isn't a proper way to treat legitimate concerns".
