US hints at deployment of ground troops

The General in charge of the US military campaign in Afghanistan has said that America may deploy ground forces. These would be in addition to the special forces already there.

General Tommy Franks made the comments at a news conference in Tashkent, in neighbouring Uzbekistan, this morning. The General flew into Bagram air base, north of Kabul, yesterday for talks with leaders of the opposition Northern Alliance.

He said that he was pleased with how the campaign inside Afghanistan stood, but said they had a great deal of work left to do.

The United States, Japan, the European Union, and Saudi Arabia, are to lead efforts to provide help to rebuild Afghanistan. The commitment followed discussions in Washington.

Japan is to host a further meeting in January. Its representative, Sadako Ogata, who co-chaired the Washington talks, rejected criticism that governments had been slow to put money on the table, saying that the fact the meeting took place showed a commitment.
