Irish Rail probes "near miss" incident

Iarnród Éireann is investigating an incident in which two locomotives travelled with no driver for about three miles on a mainline track last week. The incident happened when two unoccupied locomotives, coupled together, travelled from Arklow to near Shelton Abbey last Thursday.

Iarnród Éireann said that the incident was "a serious matter", but passengers and staff were not at risk. It also said that the ammonia train, which regularly travels on that line, was not involved. The Irish Locomotive Drivers' Association described the incident as a "serious near miss" and one of a number of similar incidents.
