Breakthrough reached at Holy Cross School

Loyalist protesters at the Holy Cross School in North Belfast are reported have reached an understanding with the security forces. This follows talks at the weekend.

Police officers have removed riot gear and scaled down security in return for a reduction of tension in the eleven-week protest. The Concerned Residents of Upper Ardoyne confirmed in a statement that they had held talks with Glenbryn residents and police over the weekend.

The talks were an attempt to reduce the tension around the picket at Holy Cross Primary School. The residents staged the protest because they claimed they had been subjected to sectarian harassment from Nationalists.

However, Holy Cross parents and Nationalist leaders from Ardoyne denied the claim, accusing Loyalists of subjecting their children to a vicious campaign of intimidation. The children returned to school this morning after the mid-term break, but there were no incidents.
