US denies Afghan campaign in stalemate

The US general directing the military campaign in Afghanistan, has denied that it has run into stalemate. General Tommy Franks added that US forces would maintain their initiative.

Meanwhile, the Taliban is claiming that there are about 500 US and allied military personnel working on the ground with the opposition Northern Alliance.

American warplanes followed up air strikes on caves and tunnels used by Taliban leaders with a new raid on Kabul early this morning.

The latest raids on the capital came after a 24-hour respite. Residents claim that at least one bomb was dropped on the outskirts of the city. There was no anti-aircraft fire heard form the Taliban.

There were also reports of further bombing raids on the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar.
