Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said that he detected splits among Taliban supporters in Afghanistan. President Musharraf said that the splits could open the way for a political end to the conflict.
However, he accepted that the American-led military campaign had to continue and he would not press for a halt to the bombing during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins around the middle of next month.
Meanwhile, President George W Bush has signed legislation clearing the way for full implementation of economic and military aid to Pakistan. It is the final stage in easing sanctions on Islamabad in the aftermath of the 1999 military coup led by President Musharraf.
It is believed that Pakistan will receive an aid package worth up to $1 billion from the US.
