A dispute between Cork Corporation and private waste contractors which had threatened commercial waste collection services in Cork has been resolved.

The contractors, who collect and dispose of the bulk of commercial waste in Cork city and county, had blockaded the entrance to the city's only landfill site after the Corporation imposed a 75% cut in the amount of material they can dump there. The contractors had also stopped collecting commercial waste.

However, following negotiations this evening, the Corporation has agreed to phase in the quota restrictions over the next three months while the contractors have agreed to seek alternative ways of disposing of the waste.
