Italy's Civil Aviation Authority has blamed pilot error for today's runway collision at Milan's Linate airport between a Scandinavian Airlines airliner and a Cessna aeroplane. One hundred and eighteen people were killed in the accident.
The authority said that the German pilot of the Cessna had taken a wrong turning onto the runway being used by the airliner as it was approaching takeoff speed.
The aircraft, which had been bound for Copenhagen, then crashed into a hangar. There was thick fog over the airport at the time. The dead include the passengers and crew from both aeroplanes as well as workers in the hangar.
Among those who died were 56 Italians and 48 other nationals. Many were thought to be Swedish. Relatives waiting at Copenhagen have been given counselling.
