Anti-Taliban forces reach agreement

A former king of Afghanistan and the country's Northern Alliance have agreed a framework for forming a government after the Taliban is overthrown.

Former king Mohammad Zahir Shah has recently taken a more central role in efforts to oust the Taliban. The Pakistani President, Prevez Musharraf, has said that the Taliban's days are numbered.

Meanwhile, the first humanitarian aid to enter Afghanistan since last month's terrorist attacks on the United States has reached the capital, Kabul.

Officials of the United Nations World Food Programme said that a convoy of trucks that left Pakistan yesterday had reached the city and the 200 tonnes of wheat they were carrying were being offloaded.

The UN monitored the progress of the convoy closely because of fears that the wheat supplies might be diverted away from those in need. The officials said that its arrival in Kabul was a positive sign.
