UN passes anti-terrorism resolution

The United Nations Security Council has passed a US-sponsored resolution to combat international terrorism. The resolution obliges member states to crack down on the sources of financial support for terrorist groups.

It also puts a legal obligation on all member states to freeze the assets of terrorists, and prohibit fund-raising for them. They must also deny safe haven to terrorists and ensure that they are brought to justice.

Those countries who fail to comply risk sanctions. The resolution was approved unanimously.

Russia has hailed the UN Security Council resolution as a "decision of exceptional significance." A spokesman for the country's foreign ministry said on Russian radio that the resolution signified an important political and legal basis for a broad anti-terrorist campaign.
