"Miracle" if survivors found says Giuliani

The Mayor of New York has said that it would be a "miracle" if anyone is still alive amongst the rubble of the World Trade Centre. "Miracles have happened, but it would unfair offering any kind of broad hope to people," said Rudy Giuliani.

The number of people missing or dead has risen to 6,729, according to Mayor Giuliani. A total of 206 dead bodies have been identified, he said, including 40 firefighters and seven other uniformed officers.

Yesterday, an inter-faith prayer service in New York's Yankee Stadium for those who died in the terrorist attacks on the US was attended by tens of thousands of people. Flags on federal buildings across the United States have been raised again to mark the end of the period of official mourning. At the beginning of another week, the administration is again urging people to resume their daily lives.

In Latin America, tens of thousands of people have taken part in acts of solidarity with the victims of the attacks. Speaking to at least 50,000 Chileans in Santiago, President Ricardo Largos condemned the attacks but urged the United States to show restraint. Similar sentiments were heard at demonstrations in Argentina and Brazil.
